Being Culturally Responsive @ W.P.S
The Aboriginal Cultural Standards Framework is identified as a priority in the Department’s Strategic Plan for WA Public Schools 2016-2019 and Focus 2019.
The framework supports staff to reflect on their behaviours, attitudes and practices with a view to progressing from cultural awareness to cultural responsiveness so we can maximise learning outcomes for Aboriginal students.

Is the framework targeted at only Aboriginal students?
The sentiments underlying the framework apply to all schools, even those with few or no Aboriginal student enrolments, like our school!
The framework is an opportunity for staff to incorporate the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures cross-curriculum priority in all learning areas to ensure that Aboriginal histories, languages and cultures are respected and valued by all students.
There are many ways in which our school is incorporating stories, history and reflections about our Aboriginal people.
Our RAP committee is an important step forward in becoming culturally responsive at Winthrop.
Without adding extra pressure on an already over-crowded curriculum, it is important to INTEGRATE, INTEGRATE, INTEGRATE!
But, what can it look like in a classroom setting with a literacy focus?

Stolen Generation- Mind Mapping
From written mind maps to physical mind mapping. Students have been given multiple opportunities across the curriculum to communicate their knowledge.
We used 'Body Mind-Mapping' to show the knowledge gained about the stolen generations.
The central person gave a brief description about what the topic is, when and where it it took place in history.
