It is important to discuss the following questions as a class...
Reading: Say Yes!
You are about to read this real life picture book about two little girls who were best friends. They did everything together. As they got older they weren't allowed to do the same things anymore. Because they looked different. Because of the law.
This is a story about the landmark 1967 Referendum, the two women who came together to change the law ... and how the Australian people said YES.
BUT FIRST... Click on the link below to meet the real life women which this book is about. Their story, is like so many other's in history.
Please excuse the derogatory language used in this film... However, it is important to recognise the negative views towards Aboriginal people which are still currently around today. It is SO IMPORTANT that we are made aware of this and do not continue to repeat other's actions.
The change starts with you. Our future generation!

Meet The Real Women from 'Say Yes'!
Upper Primary-Lesson
Each year National Reconciliation Week (NRW) celebrates and builds on the respectful relationships shared by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and other Australians. It is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to
explore how each of us can join the national reconciliation journey.
Today, you will work in groups of 5-6 to create a 'Postcard' which is very similar to a freeze frame, but slightly different.
One student will enter the stage at a time to pose as a character in the scene. As they enter the space they will say which character they are and what they are doing. A second student will move in once the first person is frozen and explain who they are and what they are doing. This will repeat itself until everyone from the group is in a 'Postcard' frozen in time.
Your teacher will give you the scene from the book 'Say Yes'. You are allowed to add in characters to the scene as long as they suit the scene. You may also be an animal or object, but you must say what your purpose is and how you are feeling in this scene.
Use your imaginations!
